The Gentle Way to a Younger Complexion
Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical, non-laser skin peeling "resurfacing" process that was invented in Europe. A vacuum pump device blows very fine medical-grade sand across the skin surface and then vacuums back the sand and the very top layer of skin which the sand has 'abraded' away, creating a 'polishing' effect. This gentle removal of the skin surface causes minimal injury but initiates a reparative process underneath which can substantially smooth and soften the skin above. Microdermabrasion can improve acne scars, fine lines, large pores and sun damaged or that 'weather beaten' skin appearance. It is often used as part of a skin rejuvenation package, in combination with Intense Pulsed Light treatments or BOTOX® .
The Microdermabrasion procedure is painless in most cases and takes about 30 minutes. After a treatment, some patients experience a mild discomfort similar to 'sunburn' for up to 24 hours and 'peel' lightly for several days. A moisturizing sun block should be applied daily after and between treatments. Makeup can be applied over the sun block within two hours after a treatment.
Microdermabrasion, when used alone for acne scars or surface irregularities etc., requires a series of 5 to 10 treatments to achieve significant and permanent improvement. Microdermabrasion is also ideal for skin surface maintenance. Treatments are inexpensive and can be done as frequently as every two weeks.
