Dr. Catherine's Healthy Advice
YES! The treatment method often referred to as "FotoFacial" uses Intensed Pulsed Light. Pulsed Light or "Broad Band" Light sources that can select a specific wavelength spectrum for each individual treatment, and can be adjusted in intensity, will safely target brown spots or redness from broken capillaries anywhere on the body. The intensity of treatment and number of treatments necessary will vary depending on the area treated, but end results are equally effective on the chest, neck or hands and can be blended to return these areas to the natural complexion of less sun exposed skin.
NO! Not all veins or lasers are alike! Laser treatment of leg veins ranges from the surgical laser "stripping" of "varicose" veins, (often medically necessary to relieve pain and swelling), to the cosmetic "laser" treatment of unsightly "spider veins". A medical evaluation of your type of vein problem should precede any treatment. Not all lasers are equally effective. "Cosmetic" laser leg vein treatments should be done with a laser specifically designed to treat "vascular" lesions or blood vessels. The type of laser used is often the major factor in the number of treatments required, treatment discomfort and quality of results.
The name "FotoFacial" refers to the use of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for skin
rejuvenation. In contrast to lasers, which use a single specific wavelength, Pulsed Light uses
filters to select a range of wavelengths in the light spectrum. Pulsed Light penetrates below the
skin surface and is most effective in treating sun damage, brown pigment "blotches" and the red
"flushing" of broken capillaries. The newest technology,"Broad Band Light" (BBL) makes
"FotoFacial" treatments, anywhere on the body, safer and more effective, while remaining a no
"downtime" procedure.
YES! Immediate results with no "downtime" can be achieved in several ways. Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes
can be faded away with Botox. Mild chemical peels or light laser resurfacing, like an "Arctic Peel", can smooth your skin surface for
a younger looking complexion. "Fillers" like Restylane and Hylaform can instantly lift and remove facial folds and wrinkles. All of
these procedures give results immediately, or within days and makeup can be applied the next day, so your younger look will be your
little secret!!
YES! Unsightly reticular "varicose" veins or "spider" veins can be very effectively treated with lasers. "Laser vein
removal" involves the delivery of many short pulses of laser energy directly over the vein. The energy travels through the skin surface
and is absorbed by the pigment of the blood vessel, causing it to heat up and the vein to close. A natural process of re-absorption follows
until the veins, where destroyed, are no longer visible. Laser vein treatment is not a cure for the process that forms "spider" veins and
not all types of veins are suitable for laser treatment.
Choose your doctor!! Making sure that any procedure will be safe and effective for your
individual skin type and problem should be your first concern. I recommend you look for an ad or location that
offers a consultation with a physician as the first step. A physician's assessment will put your health first,
allow for discussion of all possible approaches to your problem and offer you the best understanding of your
options before you choose your cosmetic procedure plan.
START NOW! Non-surgical skin rejuvenation is a healthy choice and offers many options
depending on the problems you want to address. Light chemical peels, Microdermabrasion or MicroLaserPeels can
restore surface clarity, while Botox can reverse or prevent frown lines, forehead lines and "crow's feet." Sun
damage often causes brown spots and red blotches from broken capillaries, which are reversible with "FotoFacial"
intense pulsed light treatments. Fillers, like Restylane, can correct deep folds and all these simple office procedures
have minimal "downtime."
YES. Products like collagen are known as "fillers" and are injected under deep wrinkles or
folds on the face to lift and remove them. The only FDA approved fillers, other than collagen, are made from
hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in joint cartilage. These fillers, including Restylane and Hylaform,
are often preferred over collagen because they do not cause allergic reactions. The longest lasting product,
Hylaform Plus, is the first FDA approved large particle size hyaluronic acid filler available in the USA. These
fillers are all safe and effective alternatives to collagen injections.
Laser resurfacing takes down the outer most layers of the skin to remove sun damage or acne scarring. The laser
energy also goes deeper into the dermis to stimulate collagen resulting in tightening and support to improve fine lines and wrinkles.
Intense Pulsed Light energy penetrates below the surface and specifically targets deeper pigment such as brown spots from sun damage
and redness from broken capillaries or Rosacea. Because each treatment addresses a different component of skin aging, they are
complimentary and can both be used at different stages of a skin rejuvenation program.
Non-surgical skin rejuvenation can be done on many levels and the choice of treatment
should be based on the severity of the damage, your desired level of improvement and your tolerance for
"downtime". The mildest treatments are light chemical peels, Microdermabrasion, BOTOX®, and "fillers" such
as Restylane. Treatments that reach deeper and give more permanent improvement include intense pulsed
light, "photodynamic" therapy and moderate levels of laser resurfacing. Severe damage and deep wrinkles
may only be improved by very aggressive deep laser resurfacing or Phenol Peels and surgery here may be a
better choice.
Yes. I recommend four steps for skin rejuvenation. First treat any fine lines or wrinkles that
can be removed with BOTOX®. Any lines that remain, as well as texture and other surface irregularities
should then be addressed. Treatment choices here range from mild chemical peels to varying depths of laser
resurfacing. If underlying pigment or redness and broken capillaries are present, they are best removed with
Intense Pulsed Light or FotoFacial. Finally, any remaining deep folds, wrinkles or scars can be treated with
fillers such as Restylane or Collagen.
You canıt! Before you initiate any program you need expert advice. To truly "rejuvenate" skin, the treatments must remove surface
damage and restore or restructure the supporting layers beneath. The ads are confusing because there are many treatment options, no one procedure
that can solve all aspects of skin aging and each type of treatment has its own best application. You should decide what you seek to change about
your appearance and then schedule a consultation, which is often complimentary, with a cosmetic dermatologist or surgeon.
If you have fine facial lines or wrinkles around the eyes, forehead or mouth, scars from acne or surface irregularities caused by sun damage, then
you are an ideal candidate for laser skin resurfacing. The latest advancements in laser technology allow laser resurfacing to remove skin very
precisely, layer by layer, making it safer and more adaptable to individual needs. Laser resurfacing is an excellent way to achieve younger,
healthier looking skin!
YES. The lines or "wrinkles" on your face fall into two categories: 'static' lines
caused by aging and 'dynamic' lines which are created by repeated use of your
facial muscles when you frown and squint, or are tired or tense. Botulinum Toxin or
"BOTOX® " temporarily paralyzes an injected muscle and in so doing is an effective
treatment for dynamic lines such as frown lines between your eyebrows. Without
continuous contractions, the muscle treated with BOTOX® weakens and flattens,
leaving the area smooth and relaxed and your face younger looking.
Both Restylane and BOTOX® are used very effectively to correct deep wrinkles but they work in very different ways. BOTOX® is a toxin that
blocks nerve transmission and relaxes the specific muscle injected. Because BOTOX® treats lines caused by movement, it is used most commonly
around the eyes to remove frown lines and squint lines or "crowıs feet". Restylane is a natural cosmetic filler that is injected under the
skin surface to restore fullness. Restylane is used primarily to refill "static" lines such as deep nasolabial folds and other lines that
form around the mouth. The use of both products often gives the best results.
YES. Acne scarring remains, however, one of the most difficult skin damaging
processes to reverse. The objective in any treatment approach is to take down the surface layers
of the skin and stimulate healthier, smoother collagen support from underneath. Deep "ice pick"
scars respond poorly to any type of treatment but the more general 'chicken skin' scarring can be
greatly improved. In my experience, Erbium laser resurfacing consisting of a series of
"micro-laser peels" is the most successful treatment for acne scars. It offers minimal downtime
and great flexibility in both the number and depth of treatments.
Products like Collagen and Restylane are known as "fillers" and are injected
under deep lines or wrinkles on the face to lift and remove them. Restylane is hyaluronic acid,
a natural substance found in joint cartilage. Recently FDA approved for cosmetic use in the United
States, Restylane has two main advantages over Collagen. A pre-test for allergy must be performed
for Collagen but not for Restylane, which makes Restylane safer. Restylane lasts up to 10 months,
which is, about twice as long as Collagen, making Restylane more convenient
The name "FotoFacial" refers to the use of Intensed Pulsed Light
technology. A FotoFacial treatment uses a specific portion of the light spectrum to treat skin
damage without disruption of the skin surface. Usually done in a series for best results, this
"no down time", non-invasive procedure treats a wide range of concerns including Rosacea, broken
capillaries, benign brown pigment, age spots or sun induced freckles and mottled pigmentation.
Contrary to what the name implies, FotoFacial treatments can be done anywhere on the body.
